Dark Ages

 By Mike W.

The Dark Ages spans a huge range of  theatres and conflicts but in essence we have focused upon the Dark Ages in Britain or at time strayed into the realms of foreign lands with the help of the wonderful SAGA games system.

Viking Unit Commander

In essence the key factors driving the period from a table-top point of view are fairly consistent allowing for variations in different army types and the different use (or not) of mounted troops.

1066 Campaign: This is the classic area for Dark Age conflict in England and we are working through a linked series of games taking us from Fulford Gate, through Stamford Bridge through to Hastings, using 28mm mass combat rules. If successful we may well look at some of the post Hastings actions as the Normans headed north.

Anglo-Saxons

The Great Heathen Army: 878 and all that! Using the board game of eth same name (878) we can run a pretty cool campaign with Vikings assaulting the Anglo-Saxon shires and attempting to take control of these isles.

The Crusades: Here John has 15mm armies to cover this period, with Knights Templar et al and their allies fighting against Saladin's hordes.

The Baltic Crusades: Again John has 15mm armies to cover this period, with Teutonic Knights and their allies fighting against the godless hordes, some might argue that this is Medieval in nature but I have grouped this in here nonetheless.

Ireland & Scotland: Not forgetting our Celtic neighbours we have the potential for Norman conquest of the Emerald Isle as well as the machinations of McBeth and his claims to the Scottish throne.

El Cid: Finally the Norman army can be transported to Spain to fight the Moors
