JOJO RABBIT - nominated by Mike W and Nigel. Follows the exploits of a 12 year old member of the Hitler Youth in the last days of WW2.

A comedy but ultimately a sad coming of age film.

1917 - nominated by Mike W.

Cracking WWI story that follows the exploits of two 'Tommies'  sent on a mission to deliver orders to a Battalion commander to cancel a planned attack the next day.

The film follows the two main characters without a break as they strive to complete their seemingly impossible mission.

Well recommended.

Mark

1960s - 1970s

THE LONGEST DAY - nominated by Mike and Steve. Very probably the best and most accurate film made about the D-Day Landings and the wider Operation Overlord.

Contains a whole host of US, German and British stars. Who can forget John Wayne as US Paratroop commander Lt. Col. Vandervoort! Cameos form Sean Connery and Richard Todd who he portrayed his own superior officer at the Pegasus Bridge fight, with another actor portraying Todd himself in a recreation of his own experiences.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED - nominated by Mark and Steve. A ripping yarn set in WW2, Michal Caine leads a band of  'honest and decent' German paratroopers in an assassination attempt on Winston Churchill. Notable performances by Larry Hagman as the inept local American commander and Donald Sutherland as an IRA man, working with the Germans.

You gotta love the scene where the  German Paratrooper sacrifices his life to save the little girl trapped in the Water-Mill...

KELLY'S HEROES - nominated by Steve. A far fetched yarn about a group of U.S. Soldiers going behind enemy lines to steal Nazi treasures.

A vehicle to allow Hollywood stars of the time to display their lack of acting ability - look out for Donald Sutherland, Clint Eastwood and Telly Savalas.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN - nominated by Mark. Nomination somewhat controversially opposed by Nigel, however, as a fully touchy / feely, inclusive club - everyone can nominate a favourite film, without fear of ridicule - no matter how bad it is...

Another story about the heroism of the few against he many.

A bit of a conveyor belt of British acting talent (or lack of it) from the 1960s

ZULU - nominated by Mark and Dave.

The classic tale of a British (well Welsh) Battalion's pluck against the overwhelming odds of an advancing Zulu army.

Stirling performances by Michael Caine and Stanley Baker as well as a cameo of Zulu Chief Buthelezi playing his ancestor Chief Cetewayo.

Enough songs and one liners to keep Dave amused all by himself, most evenings...

Pre 1960

BATTLE OF THE RIVER PLATE - nominated by Steve. An obscure 1956 British film about the Battle of the River Plate that took place on December 13th 1939. The battle in the South Atlantic was the first major naval battle of World War Two.

Ships from the Royal Navy's South American Division took on the might of Germany's Graf Spee which was successfully attacking merchant shipping in the South Atlantic.

Starring Victor Mature, Anthony Qualye and Steve's uncle!
