Off the Work bench - Mike W, 13/03/18

What's on the Workbench, Tuesday 13th March?

Grenadiers awaiting paint job!
Vaqueros and Adventurers
Well there's the Tres Villas Grenadier company! 8 x 28mm Boot Hill figures plus dismounted versions of the 6 x Boot Hill Vaqueros and 4 x Texian Adventurers.

The Vaqueros will bolster the two Tajano companies I currently have and the Adventurers will add more colour to the Texian Volunteer companies.

Juan Seguin in Mexican Army Uniform
Amongst the Vaqueros is Jean Seguin, Captain of the Tejano company and survivor of the Alamo... he is a somewhat controversial figure in that he supported Texas Independence and fought against Santa Anna but later he ran foul of Texan politics and ended up in the Mexican Army fighting against the USA in the Mexican-American War. He ended his life back in Texas, where he died in 1890.

Zapadores
The mounted versions of these figures will be tackled in coming weeks along with some additional Mexican regular Cavalry.

Also 4 x Boot Hill Zapadores to enlarge the existing small company of same!

Whats' Off the Workbench...

Yvon Barnikov's Swedes
As expected I completed the regiment of 12 x 28mm North Star 1672 Cavalry, painted as von Barnikov's Swedes in Dutch service.

I'm reasonably pleased with this unit but the colour combinations of the uniform were not as pleasing as I'd hoped. I added orange sashes to the figures and this brightened the figures up a little - so pleased with that decision.

Yukatan Activo Militia Grenadiers
The other figures off  the workbench this week were a company of 8 x 28mm Boot Hill Mexican Grenadiers plus supporting Officer, Sergeant and Standard Bearer for the Yukatan Militia plus a drummer I painted up to go with the Tres Villas Perminate Battalion I'm working on - see above...

Finished Zapadores Company,with Officer
Additionally I completed the 4 additional Zapadores, I customised these a little - swapping around their tools and adding slung muskets over their shoulders - all painted, based and matt varnished!

Yukatan Activo Militia Grenadiers, again!
With Drummer for the Tres Villas Grenadiers!

Battle of Appelfeldt 1673

Well now the dust has settles and I have had a chance to take on-board rules suggestions and improvements I thought I'd sort out the figures boxes and run through the casualty returns etc.
The Battlefield, French to left, Spanish / Dutch to right
Well it as a close run thing, the Spanish / Dutch armies were required to hold their lines whilst the French army's aim was to exit the tabletop by carrying the enemy positions.

The French army broke when the  elite 'Maison du Roi' brigade was routed in the centre after an epic struggle between the Swiss Guards & Dutch Guards of van Hussen's brigade. It was the Dutch Guards that held out longest, albeit with only 3 remaining damage points when their Swiss adversaries broke!

The French had already lost Guerette's Brigade on their left flank as they assaulted the Spanish lines - they routed a couple of turns prior to the centre. It is worth noting that both Spanish Brigades - Raventos & Laura, took significant casualties (General Laura himself being killed) and were close to breaking themselves. It also has to be said that Marchette's Horse brigade was untouched as it supported Guerette's attacking Foot, largely due to its unwillingness to move!

On the French Right Monmouth's brigade fought off an aggressive attack from McKay's Scots brigade which was its-self supported by Muller's brigade. Muller's troops began to engage with Montal's French brigade late in the game but to little effect.
In detail casualties in terms of Damage points was as follows:

Coldstream Guards in Fire fight with Scots of MacKays
Foote and a supporting squadrons of Dragoons
Overall the French had approx 900 Damage Points (DP) whilst the Allied Spanish & Dutch had about 1000 DPs between them. it was always going to be a tough ask of the French to win this battle but they came close - witness the 'squeaky bum' time when Laura's Spanish brigade was directly intervening to support their Dutch neighbours...

Regiment d'Anglais supported by Lord High Admiral's Foote in firefight with Dutch Foote,
who are in turn supported by MacKays Foote.
Note: Brigade Commander Duke of Monmouth & Colonel John Churchill leading the English lines.
...in hindsight / historically this did not happen and so I need to make this limitation clear in future games. If the Dutch Guards had broken it might have taken the rest of van Hussan's brigade with them leaving a big hole in the Allied centre.
So there it is - hope you enjoyed it, another 28mm spectacular to follow later in the year, once everyone's fingers have healed!

Regiment d'Auvergne - 1672

Latest French Louis XIV regiment off the workbench is another of the 'Vieux Regiments,, that of Regiment d'Auvergne. The regiment originally came into being in 1635, being formed from the earlier Regiment Du Bourg de Lespinasse which was raised in 1597.

Click pictures to enlarge

As with all Franco-Dutch wars uniforms, details are sketchy at best. The exact colour of the facings is in some doubt, being possibly various shades of blue but shown on a number of later pictures as a blue / purple. I have taken the liberty of going with purple to match the regiment's colours.

Figures are 28mm North Star.

The Coldstream Guards - 1672

Just off the Workbench and part of the new 1672 Anglo-Dutch Wars project are the restoration period Coldstream Guards.

Figures are from North Star (via Copplestone), and in 28mm to make them easier for my aging eyes to paint!

Known as Monck's Regiment these were one of two guards units of the period, they did not change from green to blue facings until about 1684/5, the exact date is uncertain.
