Friday Night Games - Imaginations campaign, Naval game

Friday 24th July saw us at Rupert's gaff playing the first in Steve's Imaginations campaign games - surprisingly a Naval game, set in quasi Napoleonic times.

Two fleets of ships faced each other, with Mat, Ollie & Mike W, commanding one fleet, lets call it the 'Good' side! It has more vessels, although with lower quality vessels but on the whole better crew. Their opponents, we'll call them the 'Evil' side,  were Mike N, Nigel & Rupert who had a smaller fleet with better class vessels but potentially poorer crews.

The forces of 'Good' commanded by Mat, Ollie & Mike W.
All line astern and sailing up the table.

All the fantastic models were from Steve's collection and the rules were home brewed by Steve as well who acted as umpire.

Close-up of the 'Good' side's Blue Squadron, commanded by Ollie.

The 'Good' side's White Squadron, commanded by Mike W.

Much death and destruction was handed out by both sides and it looks like the game will go on for another week, not least because no vessel has the movement capability to get off the table to safety in the near future!

The 'Good' side's Red Squadron, commanded by Mat.

The 'Evil' side's White Squadron, commanded by Nigel.

Naval Battle in the Java Sea

The game was put on for Friday 6th December by Mat, using rules supplied by Mark and hosted by Mat, who also supplied the models.

Dutch Vessels

ABDA (American, British & Dutch) allies under Admiral Mark set sail at speed to intercept Japanese invasion force east of Java

American & British Vessels

Admiral Dave had a stronger Japanese force well covered by air power, but his forces were initially scattered so he encountered the Allies piecemeal.

The Japanese Fleet

Admiral Dave was bold to close range using his light cruisers and destroyers whilst high level bombers tried to smash the allies. Initial inaccurate fire soon started to play heavy on the Japanese, with both light cruisers having to turn tail after serious hits from British and US guns took a toll

But at the critical moment the two heavy cruisers of the Japanese fleet sailed into range and in ten devastating minutes sank the Dutch Cruiser Java that brave Admiral Mark had deployed at the van of his line, generously taking second position in his flagship!

Explosions erupt around teh head of the fleet

Sensing that all chance of victory was gone ABDA Float retired - just as in the real historical battle - one cruiser down!

Friday Night Games: Ancient Naval

High jinx in the Mediterranean with a Naval conflict between those crazy Greeks and whacky Persians.

Friday 24th November, saw  a gripping game  put on by Mat T  using his own models and rules at Mike N's gaff. The game ended up as a strategic win for the Greeks as the Persians were denied the ability to meet their objectives. However, the Persian fleet consisting of Sidonese and allied Greek fleet performed the best on the night.

A closer view of some of these vessels

The squadron that definitely performed the worst was the Persian pentacosters, commanded by Mikey N. These guys lost 60% of their number in one game turn  with the rest fleeing for the Asian coast to face Xerxes wrath....

Ramrastic events at sea!

Battle of the Falklands 1914.

From Dave

Ollie took some pics of the 2nd week game, Battle of the Falklands 1914.

This first picture has the far tip of the island, Port Stanley off table to the top left. Centre right are the ships HMS Invincible and Inflexible, light cruisers in line in the centre of the table. German ship in line from bottom left. One has already been sunk. The black bits are smoke markers.

Second pic is a close up of one of the British battle cruisers.

Third pic is Dave, and Rupert (Admiral Stoddard) looking on at disbelief on what Capt. Ollie was doing with one of his light cruisers!

Friday Night Games - Battle of Coronel

By Dave V

A little write up on last nights game, the Battle of Coronel, 1st Novembner 1914.

This took place near to the coast of Chile, the nearest city and port of the same name. The German East Asia squadron, under the command of Vice Admiral Graf von Spee, were intercepted by a British squadron, under the command of Rear Admiarl Christopher Cradock.

The Germans had the two sister armoured cruiser ships, the Scharnhorst (Spee's flagship) and the Gneisenau, and 3 light cruisers, the Dresden, Leipzig and Nurnberg, each of different but similar classes. The British had the armoured cruisers HMS Good Hope, (Cradocks flag) the HMS Monmouth, and the light cruiser HMS Glasgow. The remaining vessel was the armoured merchant cruiser, the HMS Otranto.

Phil and Rupert drove the Germans, Mat and Ollie the Brits. Mark and Steve were spectators as the game got off quite quickly.

Phil started off, as is his want, on the edge of the Ocean, and the Brits making best speed to intercept them. As the fleets closed, the German big ships commenced firing, as they had the longest range with their 8" guns, in both double and single turrets. The Brits turned to starboard, the Glasgow going out to lay smoke to cover the rest of the fleet. The poor old Otranto, with no armour and slow speed, brought up the rear but was determined to get in on the action.

By now the fleets were in range of another, and Glasgow received many hits which eventually sunk it. The Good Hope, with two single 9" guns, (one fore and one aft) started to cause Critical Hits on the German big ships. As they got closer, torpedoes were fired by both side, but had no real affect as the target managed to evade.

Both fleets were now getting really close, in fact a German light cruiser fired torpedoes at point blank range at one of the British ships, but missed!

By now the gallant Otranto was in range to open up with some of its pop guns, .

By about 10pm, it was all over the Scharnhorst had been sunk, the Gneisenau was dead in the water, but the 3 light cruisers had reduced speed and guns due to damage. The HMS Glasgow was the only Britsh casualty, being sunk quite early on. So it was deemed a victory for the British, although the Good Hope and Monmouth were also damaged.

In reality, the Good Hope and the Monmouth were sunk with all hands, the Glasgow and Otranto got away. The German ships were hardly damaged, the only casualties were 3 men slightly injured, but worryingly for Spee he had used up a load of ammo during this encounter, which was to cause him problems when the British reappeared with more ships, seeking revenge against Spee.

Historic Movements during Battle, Wikipedia Article <here>

This will be next week, Battle of The Falklands, December 1914, but to make a game of it, all the German ships as above will be present. The Glasgow was the only British ship that was present at both fights.

1/700 Napoleonic Warships

From Paul Browning

Some pictures for the SAS website from my collection:

From Wednesday evenings game and the age of sail / Napoleonic era:  A win for the French  - a successful blockage run.

Ships are 1:700 scale from Warlord Games and their Black Sails collection:
https://store.warlordgames.com/collections/black-seas and from Meridian Meridian 1/700 scale Trafalgar ships – Navy Models & Books

Wreck in the distance was scratch built from spares.  In fact I made 6 wrecks from spares after making 24 ships of varying sizes/ types.

The water effect was achieved via pressing crumpled tin foil onto damp Tetrion filler. After painting, apply a  layer of PVA glue. Initially you think, oh my god what have I done, this isn't going to work, but after a few minutes everything starts to become transparent. If you wish to create perception of depth, repeat process until desired effect is achieved.

ACW Naval

Recently discovered are a series of photos and documents from old club games on an old CD. I am publishing them here for posterity.

The photos on the CD is dated 16/05/2002, so guessing that this game was about or before this date.

Figures are from Warren's collection.
