Free speech is killing us !
Hardy Kenwright of The New York Illustrated news is “deliberately rewriting history” over his reporting of the attack on “free speech” with the capture of his good friend and colleague Hugh R. Lying.
Gen. Ambrose Burnside |
It is a disinformation campaign that fails to apprise its northern readers that when Congress was called into special session, July 4, 1861, President Ab Lincoln issued a message to both northern houses defending his various actions, including the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, arguing that it was both necessary and constitutional.
Moreover, General Burnside’s recent General Order No. 38 states that:
“The habit of declaring sympathy for the enemy will not be allowed in this department. Persons committing such offences will be at once arrested with a view of being tried . . .or sent beyond our lines into the lines of their friends. It must be understood that treason, expressed or implied, will not be tolerated in this department.”
Abe Lincoln |
This makes the speaking out or publishing anything against the war aims of the north or the President Abe Lincoln illegal. As Hardy Kenwright is well aware but not enlightening his readers, northern newspapers that do speak out are being promptly closed and orators are being arrested without proper address to a free and open trial in a court of Law.
The criticism directed towards the south equally well applies to oneself. The article that appeared in the New York Illustrated new is a proverbial idiom of the “pot calling the kettle black"
Yours faithfully, General Green
