It appears that war is also taking its toll on the north. It is widely accepted that the buying a substitute to fight in your place in the Union army is perfectly legal.
As General Green bluntly puts it:
“The rich men of the north are buying their way off the front line. For those in the north it’s become a rich man’s war but a poor man’s fight.”
There is of course another very obvious reason why buying a substitute may not be a very wise course of action ! Who knows where this could lead if it caught on.
