On behalf of the Confederacy: General Green speaks out against the Emancipation Proclamation
“The Emancipation Proclamation is just another way for the Yankees' to bolster the number of soldiers that they have to replace due to casualties on the field of battle.
In view of the vast increase of the forces of the enemy that we now encounter at Federicksburg, it makes it an imperative for the Confederacy to increase our own numbers to save the honour of our families, those ladies from Hazard County and our social system from destruction.
Every efforts should be made, every means be employed, until God, in his mercy, shall bless us with the establishment of our independence.
